The Living Land: New Frontiers in Earth System Science

August 18-22, 2025 in Harnack Haus, Berlin

Report

From 18th to 22nd of August, the members and affiliates of the Center gathered at Harnack Haus in Berlin to discuss the newest research in the field and develop plans for tackling emerging research questions together.

The workshop featured an engaging program that included invited talks, poster sessions, hands-on practical sessions and big picture discussions.

With 24 talks and 13 posters, this workshop brought together diverse perspectives. The topics it covered ranged from trends in surface atmosphere-land hydrology, to global carbon–water dynamics and anthropogenic carbon, all the way to data and model integration through machine learning. A highlight of the workshop was the series of practical, hands-on sessions with a team from Caltech on ClimaLand, Climate Modeling Alliance’s land surface model. Furthermore, the workshop included a series of big picture discussions to create a cohesive vision and mission for the Center that will lead to impactful outcomes.
